Road conditions
From Madurai the cab takes the Theni highway via Usilampatti and Andipatti to Theni, then on to Chinnamanur. From Chinnamanur the hill road passes a forest check post and climbs 18 hairpin bends to Meghamalai and Highwavys. The road on top is narrow and some stretches can be rough after rain. No state border, so there is no permit charge; toll, parking and any forest entry fees are extra.
Best time to travel
Open all year. October to March is cool with misty mornings; the hills look greenest after the monsoon. Heavy rain can cause small landslips on the ghat road, and the forest check post controls entry timings, so we plan to go up and come down in daylight.
